At the beginning of this year, my wife and I officially hit the housing market. We’ve had our current house for 10 years and with a growing family and a bigger income, we thought it was finally time to allow ourselves to upgrade our lifestyle. The home buying process isn’t something I’m very familiar with, however, so I went out looking for guidance. As luck would have it, I found a book that recently came out that was perfect for me. It’s called First-Time Home Buyer: The Complete Playbook to Avoiding Rookie Mistakes.

One of the first side hustles I ever picked up was dog sitting via Rover. I created my Rover pet sitting profile back in 2015 and have watched dozens of dogs over the years. It’s worked out well for me. I’ve been able to make a decent amount of side hustle income from Rover, and importantly, I’ve been able to earn this income in a way that’s been fun and hasn’t been much work.

A little over a year ago, my wife and I went to an open house for a fancy, big house. It was in a good neighborhood, close to my wife’s family, and ideally situated for both of our commutes. The house was amazing. Fully renovated. A large lot. Gorgeous finishes. Great curb appeal. It even had a mother-in-law living area that could be separated from the rest of the house and probably used as the occasional Airbnb space.

When I think about life-changing things I’ve bought over the years, the list is pretty small. A laptop. My first smartphone. The robot vacuum that’s saved me literally hundreds of hours of cleaning time. But perhaps the best thing I’ve ever bought has to be an ebike.

Today, if you ask me what my FI number is, my response is that I really don’t have one anymore. Let’s look at three reasons why I don’t have a FI number these days. Maybe some of these reasons apply to you too.
