About five years ago, when I was in a very different place and just starting on my money journey, I wrote a post about what my money plans were for the next 10 years. I called the post Our Basic 10 Year Plan (And What Might Trip Us Up). I had a general outline of what I thought my life might look like, but as you can tell by the title of my post, I was also cognizant that things could change. After all, life is too fluid and unpredictable to really know what the future will hold.Â
My Story
Screw Getting Picked – Pick Yourself Instead
Too often, we wait for people to pick us. But screw that. In this world, you should always pick yourself. If you don’t, no one else will.
The Unexpected Benefit of Earning Less Money Each Year
An assumption a lot of people make when thinking about their income is that it’ll have a sort of linear, upward trajectory. It’s a logical assumption to make. Each year, you gain more experience, get promotions, earn raises, and move to higher-paying jobs. It’s natural to think that as you progress in your career, your […]
There Are Very Few Decisions That Will Ruin Your Life
If you spend too much time listening to what most people tell you, it can often feel like we don’t have much room to make mistakes. I know that’s how I’ve often felt. For most of my life, I was taught that you needed to do things a certain way – go to a good […]
My Legal Career And The Example Of Sunk Costs
My mom has been staying with us for the past few months to help us take care of our son, and as a result, she’s been able to get a look at my daily work routine as a full-time writer and blogger. Most mornings, after I drop my son off at daycare, I get home, […]
Daycare Is My Largest Monthly Expense – But There’s More To It Than Just Money
There’s a thing I’ve noticed about the way some people think about how we should make decisions – they seem to think of every decision we make in terms of money. Of course, this is a blog about money, so naturally, money is the primary way we think about our decisions here. But as I’ve […]
You Can Grit Through Anything For A Bit, But You Shouldn’t Do It Forever
My first year of law school was probably the craziest and most stressful year of my life. If you want to be successful with money, you need to have a good money system in place. Your money system consists of all of the financial accounts and tools you use to keep your financial life in order – things like your checking accounts, savings accounts, and any fintech apps you might use. Once […]
Watching Others Move Forward When You’re Still Figuring Things Out
Sometimes, I like to go on LinkedIn and see what people are up to. I like LinkedIn – I think it’s more interesting than Facebook or Instagram. Looking at what someone shows you of their life is one thing. But seeing someone’s career progression over the years is more insightful. After all, we spend most […]
Making Money Writing On Medium – Did I Make Any Money In My First Month?
Two years ago, I quit my job as an attorney to become a full-time writer and blogger. And even though I now make a living by writing words, for some reason, I’ve never really felt like a writer. I think it’s because blogging feels a bit different. It’s writing – but it’s a different type […]
