The way Uber Eats late delivery compensation works is interesting. Uber Eats states that if your order does not arrive by the “Latest Arrival By” time, then you can cancel your order for free and receive a full refund. They also have an unofficial policy that they don’t advertise where they’ll give you some Uber Eats credit if you agree to keep your order.
That being said, there’s a bit of nuance to how the Uber Eats late delivery compensation works. In this post, we’ll go over the Uber Eats late delivery compensation policy, what counts as “late” under their policy, and how I recommend using it to your benefit.
Uber Eats Late Delivery Compensation
Uber Eats offers compensation to customers who place an order and have it arrive late. At the outset, it’s important to remember that Uber Eats does not consider an order late unless it will not arrive by their “Latest Arrival By” time. We’ll go into more detail about this in the next section.
If your order is late or is going to be late, here’s what you can do. First, you’ll need to contact Uber Eats support. You can do this in the Uber Eats app, under the “Help” section of your order. You’ll want to select the option that says “My order is taking longer than expected.”
From there, the app will take you to an automated chatbot. If your order is going to be late, the chatbot will tell you that you can cancel your order at no charge and ask if you would like to cancel your order.
If you choose that you do want to cancel your order, Uber Eats will then bring up another screen that says they’ll give you 20% of the order price in Uber Cash if you agree to keep your order and not cancel it. You’ll then have the option of choosing to keep your order in exchange for the Uber Cash (which you’ll be able to use on a future order), or cancel your order and receive a full refund.
In short, you have two choices for late delivery compensation.
- Cancel your order and receive a full refund; or
- Keep your order and receive 20% of the price of your order as Uber Cash that you can use on a future order.
Remember that to receive this option, you have to go to the Uber Eats support section of the app and mark that your order is taking longer than expected. If you do nothing, Uber Eats does not automatically give you a refund.
What Does Uber Eats Count As Late?
When you place an order on Uber Eats, you’ll see two delivery times on your delivery screen. Below is a picture of the order screen for an order I placed.
As you can see, there are two delivery times when you place your order. The first delivery time is the “estimated arrival” time. This is the time Uber Eats thinks your order will arrive.
The second time is the “latest arrival by” time. This is the latest Uber Eats believes your order will arrive.
The “estimated arrival” time is exactly that – an estimate. If your order is later than that time, Uber Eats does not consider the order late and you won’t be able to cancel it or get a refund for your order.
The “latest arrival by” time is the time that matters. If your order is past this time or won’t be able to get to you by this time, then Uber Eats considers your order late. It’s when this time is missed that Uber Eats will allow you to either cancel your order and receive a refund, or will give you Uber Cash worth 20% of your order price if you agree to keep your order.
How I Recommend Using The Uber Eats Late Delivery Compensation
When it comes to late deliveries, I always accept the Uber Cash offer. To me, the fact that an order is very late is frustrating, but ultimately not that big of a deal. If the food does arrive cold, I can always reheat it if necessary.
Receiving Uber Cash is a nice way for me to get something back for the order being late. And getting 20% of the order price can be lucrative if I order a lot of food. Thus, I recommend keeping the order and accepting the Uber Cash.
Remember that you have to contact Uber Eats support via the app to get this benefit, as Uber Eats will not do it automatically. If you do nothing, your order will arrive late and you won’t receive any compensation from Uber.
Final Thoughts
The Uber Eats late delivery compensation policy isn’t bad. Most of the time, your order will arrive within the estimated time or the latest arrival by time. If it does arrive late, you can receive a refund if you really want it, or receive some Uber Cash as compensation for the late delivery. This is better than some other delivery apps, which don’t give you anything for orders being late.
I hope this post gives you a good summary of how the Uber Eats late compensation policy works.
