There’s a common saying amongst DoorDash and Uber Eats delivery drivers – no tip, no trip. What this means is that for many DoorDash and Uber Eats drivers, if a customer doesn’t tip, Dashers and Uber Eats drivers won’t accept the delivery. For customers, not tipping often means longer waits for their food.
In this post, we’ll go into detail about what the “no tip, no trip” movement is all about, share how DoorDash and Uber Eats drivers are paid, and explain why tipping your delivery driver is so important if you want a good experience with ordering food from DoorDash or Uber Eats.
No Tip, No Trip – What’s The Movement About?
No Tip, No Trip is a saying that has become a bit of a movement among DoorDash and Uber Eats drivers. In essence, it’s the principle that Dashers and Uber Eats drivers should not accept orders where the customer didn’t tip (see this Reddit thread, for example, urging drivers not to accept no-tip orders). We’ll go into more detail about how delivery drivers are paid on DoorDash or Uber Eats, but the important thing to know is that delivery drivers for these apps rely heavily on tips for their earnings.
If you look on YouTube or TikTok, you’ll often find videos where drivers show restaurants with tables full of food that haven’t been picked up. See for example this video below:
These orders that haven’t been picked up are usually because they’re no tip orders. While DoorDash and Uber Eats drivers can’t see whether a customer tipped in advance, they can typically tell if a customer tipped based on how much the order is paying. Low-paying orders simply aren’t going to be accepted by many drivers. If they do get accepted, it’s usually because they’re either going a very short distance or they’re part of a double order (where a Dasher or Uber Eats driver receives two orders at the same time).
So, for customers that don’t tip, the No Tip, No Trip movement means that they may be waiting a long time for their orders to get delivered to them.
How DoorDash And Uber Eats Drivers Are Paid
For people who don’t know, I think it’s helpful to understand how DoorDash and Uber Eats pay their drivers. Drivers are paid on a per-delivery basis, with each delivery payment made up of three parts: (1) base pay from DoorDash or Uber Eats, (2) tips from customers, and (3) and bonus or peak pay being offered by DoorDash or Uber Eats.
Both DoorDash and Uber Eats offer drivers a base pay rate. This is typically a small amount paid by DoorDash and Uber Eats, often just a few dollars. During periods of high demand where more drivers are needed, DoorDash and Uber Eats may offer drivers a bonus pay on each order, usually $1 or $2 more per order.
The remainder of a driver’s earnings come from customer tips. Based on my experience, about half of my earnings from food delivery comes from customer tips.
For example, here’s a look at some recent DoorDash deliveries I completed and what I was paid for them:
As you can see, tips made up a substantial portion of my earnings for these four deliveries. If I didn’t receive a tip, I’d earn substantially less.
You can see how little you’re paid by looking at a trip where I didn’t receive a tip. Here’s an Uber Eats delivery I completed where the customer did not tip me.
I ended up accepting this trip because it was traveling a really short distance and I knew I could complete it quickly, but you can see that without a tip, the order was paying so little that many drivers would simply reject it.
Why Tipping Your Delivery Driver Is So Important
The importance of tips is clear when you understand how drivers are paid by these delivery apps. You can expect that for most drivers, tips make up about half of their earnings. Without tips, DoorDash and Uber Eats drivers would make substantially less.
Remember that DoorDash and Uber Eats drivers are independent contractors, so they can choose which orders to accept or decline. Delivery drivers need to treat themselves as if they are a business, which means they’re only going to accept orders that are profitable for them. If a customer’s order doesn’t have a tip and, as a result, isn’t paying much, most delivery drivers are going to reject the order.
If all the delivery drivers reject the order, that means the order is going to sit at the restaurant until someone is willing to accept a low-paying order or until DoorDash or Uber Eats raises the base pay on the order to the point where it’s worth accepting without a tip.
One other thing to think about is tipping with cash. While most delivery drivers love being tipped in cash, the major downside of tipping in cash with DoorDash and Uber Eats is that delivery drivers won’t know you’re going to tip in cash. That means, even if you’re going to tip a lot, your order will appear low-paying and delivery drivers likely won’t accept it. My advice is to tip in the app if you want to avoid any issues. If you really want to be generous to your delivery driver, tip in the app so that drivers will know there’s a tip with the order and provide an extra cash tip on arrival.
Final Thoughts
Tipping your delivery driver is very important, as tips make up about half of most driver’s earnings. The no tip, no trip saying (and movement) is simply a way for drivers to articulate that without a tip, most delivery drivers aren’t going to accept the delivery request.
For me, I don’t always reject no-tip orders, but if I am accepting a no-tip order, it has to be going only a few blocks at most and that I know I can complete very quickly. Otherwise, it isn’t worthwhile for me.
If you want to make sure your order gets picked up and delivered on time, you should always leave a tip in the delivery app.
