What happens if Grubhub can’t find a driver for your order? It’s a question you might face if you place an order and find that you’re waiting a long time for someone to deliver your order. So what happens? For the most part, it’ll be rare that this happens, but if it does, Grubhub will cancel the order and issue you a refund.

With that said, in this post, we’ll take a more detailed look at what happens if Grubhub can’t find a driver and go into some of the reasons why this might happen and how you can avoid this issue in the first place.

What Happens If Grubhub Can’t Find A Driver?

When you place an order with Grubhub, you’ll see an expected delivery time, which tells you how long Grubhub estimates it will take for your order to arrive. Grubhub gives the expected delivery time before the order has been assigned to a driver. As a result, the expected delivery time can change depending on how long it takes for Grubhub to find a driver and where the driver is when they receive the order (as well as whether they have other deliveries to complete).

In rare circumstances, Grubhub might not be able to find a driver at all. If this happens, Grubhub will refund you for your order (using the payment method you used). Unfortunately, it can sometimes take a while before you can get a refund for your order. Some people online have noted that you might have to wait as long as two hours before you can cancel your order and get a refund.

The good thing is that it’s pretty rare for Grubhub to not find a driver at all. But it can take a while to find a driver in some circumstances.

In the next section, we’ll look at the main reasons why Grubhub can’t find a driver and what you can to do to make sure that you aren’t waiting a long time for Grubhub to get someone to deliver your order.

Reasons Why Grubhub Can’t Find A Driver

Below are the most likely reasons why Grubhub can’t find a driver to deliver your order.

1. You Didn’t Tip Your Driver

The main reason Grubhub can’t find a driver to deliver an order is that the customer didn’t tip.

Most customers don’t realize that Grubhub drivers can see if a customer tipped. In fact, tips are one of the important parts of whether a Grubhub driver will deliver an order.

Here’s why. Grubhub payouts are made of three parts – (1) the base payment, (2) the tip, and (3) any additional payout or bonus that Grubhub is paying. In the past, Grubhub used to offer a high base payout, but in recent years, Grubhub has moved in the direction of other delivery companies and dramatically reduced payouts. In some instances, the base payout Grubhub offers is as low as $2.

What that means is that if the customer doesn’t tip, the driver will only make a few dollars to complete the delivery. Smart drivers, therefore, will reject those low-paying orders. Grubhub does eventually raise the base payout on those orders to entice drivers to accept them, but it can take some time before Grubhub does that. That means if you don’t tip, you’ll likely be waiting longer for your order.

Remember, Grubhub couriers are independent contractors. That means they don’t work directly for Grubhub and have the right to accept or reject any orders they get.

With this information, a good rule is to provide a good tip when you’re ordering delivery. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it’ll also increase the odds that your order gets picked up and delivered quickly.

2. You Live Far Away From The Restaurant

Grubhub drivers are paid on a per delivery basis, which means if you live far away from the restaurant, you may be waiting longer. Not only does it take longer to deliver an order that has to travel farther, but many drivers may reject those orders if the payout isn’t high enough.

If you live far away from the restaurant you’re ordering from, you’ll want to consider leaving a generous tip. This will increase the payout for the order and hopefully be enough to get someone to make the long delivery.

3. There Aren’t Enough Grubhub Drivers Available to Pick Up Your Order

In rare circumstances, Grubhub can’t find a driver simply because there aren’t any Grubhub Drivers available. This will usually only happen during off-hours, typically in the early morning or late night hours.

During regular hours, if you find no one is picking up your order, it’s more likely that it’s because the payout is too low, rather than that there aren’t any drivers available.

In very rare circumstances, there could also be an issue with the Grubhub app. The Grubhub app doesn’t crash as often as DoorDash, but it can still happen. If you left an appropriate tip and ordered from a nearby restaurant, then this could be the most likely culprit.

Final Thoughts

In sum, if Grubhub can’t find a driver, you will ultimately get a refund from Grubhub. However, it can take some time before you are eligible to cancel your order and receive a refund. In some instances, you may have to wait as long as two hours before Grubhub officially cancels the order for you.

If that’s too long to wait, you can try getting in touch with Grubhub customer service and see if they will allow you to cancel your order. If you complain, most of the time, they will let you do so.

But either way, in the rare instance when Grubhub can’t find a driver, you will get a refund.
