GoTrax G5 Review

The GoTrax G5 Electric Scooter is a new commuter scooter from GoTrax that I’ve been riding for a while now. It’s a scooter that’s well-built, has a good top speed, and offers a lot of great features. And with a price point in the $500 range, it’s a scooter that offers a lot of value for the money too. After putting several hundred miles on this scooter over the past few months, I can say that it’s a scooter that is well worth considering for anyone looking for a good scooter on a budget.

In this GoTrax G5 review, we’ll take an in-depth look at the features of the GoTrax G5, what my experience with this scooter has been like, and why you might want to consider getting this scooter for yourself.

When I classify different types of scooters, I typically think in terms of three types of scooters. The first type of scooter is what I call the “toy scooter.” These are small scooters, typically with a fairly low range and a low top speed (a scooter like the Hiboy S2 or the Hiboy S2R fits in this category). They’re also usually fairly light and feature small wheels (typically with solid tires). High-powered scooters, on the other hand, are typically larger scooters with bigger decks, larger wheels, and very high top speeds (often 30 mph or more). These scooters are also usually expensive, costing $1,500 or more in most cases (a good example of a high-powered scooter that I have is the Varla Eagle One).

The GoTrax G5 falls into a sort of middle category of scooter – somewhere between a toy scooter and a high-powered scooter. With a max speed of about 20 mph, it’s still a fast scooter, but you’re not going to get blazing fast speeds as you would with larger, more powerful scooters.

The ride quality of the GoTrax G5 is excellent. It uses 10-inch air-filled tires, which makes for a smooth ride, especially when compared to lower-end scooters that use solid tires. The GoTrax G5 also features front-wheel suspension, which helps to smooth out your ride even more. Having front suspension is a nice bonus, as you don’t often see any sort of suspension for scooters at this price point.

In terms of power, the GoTrax G5 features a 500-watt rear hub motor, which should be strong enough to tackle most hills. I don’t live in a particularly hilly area, but there are a few big hills around me and I’ve never had a problem powering up them with the GoTrax G5.

The range on the GoTrax G5 is also good. You should get about 20-25 miles of range, which should be good enough for daily commuting. The battery is integrated into the scooter, so you’ll have to bring it inside to charge. That being said, the scooter folds up easily for you to carry it inside. It’s not a lightweight scooter, but it is still small enough that you can carry it indoors fairly easily.

The brakes on the GoTrax G5 are also good. It uses front and rear drum brakes, which aren’t my favorite type of brake, but they work fine from my experience. I’ll probably need to do a bit more research on how drum brakes work though, as I’m admittedly not very knowledgeable about them.

My Experience With The GoTrax G5

I’ve had a great time using the GoTrax G5 and it has quickly become one of my favorite scooters. As a commuter scooter, it’s excellent. I’m able to get anywhere around the city easily, saving money and time along the way by avoiding having to pay for parking or deal with traffic. For the most part, I typically keep my travels to around 10 miles round trip. For longer distances, I prefer to opt for an ebike.

The GoTrax G5 has also been a great scooter for doing deliveries with DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Grubhub. I use a delivery backpack to carry my orders and the air-filled tires and front suspension smooth out my ride, helping me avoid spilling orders in my bag. Using the GoTrax G5 is also advantageous because I’m able to quickly maneuver through traffic and I can bring it inside with me when needed, saving me time from having to lock it up.

One interesting feature that the GoTrax G5 offers is the ability to require a PIN code to unlock the scooter. If you have this setting on, anyone riding your scooter has to first enter a PIN code into the display to unlock the wheels – otherwise, the scooter won’t move. I’ve opted to turn this feature off because it’s a bit of a pain to have to enter a PIN code every time I want to ride it, but it can be a useful feature if you’re doing DoorDash or Uber Eats and need to leave the scooter outside for a second.

Riding at night with the GoTrax G5 is also amazing. The scooter comes with your standard front and rear lights, but it also includes blue lights on the underside of the deck that light up the ground around you. These lights are great, as they help increase your visibility when you’re riding at night. They also look cool too.

I do have a few small nitpicks with the GoTrax G5. In terms of range, it’s good, but I do wish it had a bit more range. 20-25 miles is fine, but it does put some limitations on how far I can go with it.

The kickstand also isn’t great. I find that it’s a bit too small and I’ll often accidentally tip over the scooter when I bump into it or have it set on uneven ground. The scooter is low to the ground though, so it might just be a limitation of the geometry of this scooter.

I’ve also had issues with filling up the rear tire with air. Because the rear tire holds the motor, you need to use an adapter to fill it. My issue is that I don’t understand how to remove the adapter without a bunch of air leaking out. This might just be me not understanding how to use the adapter. It’s not a huge issue and my solution has been to overfill the rear tire before I unplug the adapter so that any air loss puts my tire pressure at the amount I want it to be at. I’m also buying some different tire valve extenders, which I bet will solve this issue (UPDATE: Using a screw-on valve extender did the trick and makes filling the rear tire easy. I bought a 4 pack of Valve Slime extenders on Amazon for $10 or so).

These are all minor nitpicks though. Overall, I’ve had a very good experience with this scooter, especially when you consider the attractive price point and nice features.

Who Is The GoTrax G5 Best Suited For?

The GoTrax G5 is best used as a commuter scooter – ideally to get yourself to work or for running errands. It’s well suited for city riding thanks to the air-filled tires and front suspension. I’d say it’s probably the most comfortable scooter you can get at this price range.

If you’re looking for a high-powered scooter, this isn’t the scooter you’re going to want. But for most people, high-powered scooters aren’t necessary. And it’s not like the GoTrax G5 is a slow scooter. With a top speed of 20mph, you can commute plenty fast.

I think the GoTrax G5 can also work well for someone looking to do food delivery with apps like DoorDash and Uber Eats, but you’ll need to be aware of the range limitations. If you’re someone who does DoorDash and Uber Eats part-time (like I do), then this can be a good option. It’ll easily give you enough range to cover a lunch or dinner shift.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I’m a big fan of the GoTrax G5. It’s one of my favorite scooters and is a scooter I turn to quite a bit when I’m running errands or need to get somewhere. When I have friends who need to borrow scooters, most of them will opt for the GoTrax also because of how fun and comfortable it is to ride.

So, if you’re in the market for a solid, affordable commuter scooter that offers a lot of good features at a good price point, consider taking a closer look at the GoTrax G5. It’s been a joy to ride.
