OfferUp is one of the most popular apps you can use to sell things online. If you’re looking to earn extra money, whether it’s buying and flipping things or selling things in your house that you’re no longer using, OfferUp is a great place to do just that. But it’s not the only option available. Indeed, there are many other apps like OfferUp that you can use to sell things and earn extra income.
I’ve written regularly about how I’ve made extra income selling things I’m no longer using with apps like OfferUp. I’ve even made money selling items that people have thrown away.
OfferUp is one of the best places you can list your items for sale. They have over 20 million monthly active users and recently purchased LetGo, another buy/sell app that had a lot of users.
But if you want to make sure you find buyers for the things you’re selling, it’s best to diversify and list your items on every platform that you can. That way, you can get as many eyes on your items as possible.
In this post, we’ll take a look at 8 apps like OfferUp that you can use to sell things
1. Facebook Marketplace
Facebook Marketplace is one of the largest platforms you can use to sell items both locally and nationally. You can find it in the Facebook app, so if you have a Facebook account, you have access to Facebook Marketplace too.
What makes Facebook Marketplace a good place to sell stuff is the large reach that it has. Since almost everyone has a Facebook account, that means almost anyone looking to buy things can search on Facebook Marketplace.
Creating a listing is easy also. You simply take a photo of your item, provide some information and a description of what you’re selling, and put a price on your item. Anyone interested in purchasing your item can message you via the Facebook app. You can even take payments using the Facebook app.
In addition to local sales, Facebook Marketplace also supports national sales. If you list items for sale nationally, people can purchase your item via the Facebook Marketplace app. Facebook will then provide you with a shipping label so you can ship your item off.
Facebook Marketplace is free, so it doesn’t cost anything to list your items on Facebook Marketplace. It’s the first place I go when I’m looking to sell furniture or other items locally.
2. eBay
eBay is my favorite selling platform to use if I’m selling smaller items that I’m able to send in the mail. I prefer using eBay for these sorts of items because I know I’ll get the most views on it. Instead of limiting buyers to my area, I can get buyers from anywhere.
The eBay app makes it easy to list items for sale. Simply upload some photos, include some information about your item, and set your shipping prices. When your item sells, eBay will send your payment directly to your bank account.
One thing to note is that eBay does charge a fee when you sell your item. In general, you’ll pay a 12.9% commission on each item that you sell. If you can sell something locally and avoid those fees, then you might want to do it that way. But if you’re selling something more obscure or something that would be better suited on a larger marketplace, I recommend using eBay.
3. Craigslist
Craiglist is an OfferUp alternative that almost everyone reading this is probably familiar with. It’s one of the oldest websites out there. With Craigslist, you can create a listing, then wait for people to contact you by email or phone. When you find a buyer, you can then arrange to meet somewhere for the sale.
The main downside with Craigslist is that they don’t have an app and the website is pretty old. That makes it a bit more annoying to create a listing.
That being said, a lot of people still use Craigslist when they’re looking for things to buy, so listing your item on Craigslist still makes a lot of sense if you want to reach more potential buyers.
4. Mercari
Mercari is an app similar to OfferUp that allows you to sell anything via its app. The main thing about Mercari is that everything is done via the app. Buyers pay for the item via Mercari and then you ship the item to the buyer. This makes Mercari best suited for smaller items that you’re able to mail easily.
Mercari charges a 10% commission for each item you sell on the app. Mercari will provide the shipping label for you and all you have to do is ship the item. In some places, there is also an option for Mercari Local, which partners with Uber to pick up your item and deliver it to the customer. This comes with a fee as well, but it can be convenient so you don’t have to waste time arranging a meetup.
The app looks good and is a good option if you’re are looking for another place to list items to a wide audience.
5. Poshmark
Poshmark is a selling app specifically for clothing. You can buy and sell almost any piece of clothing on the app, although most people are selling designer clothes. When someone buys your item, Poshmark sends you a shipping label and you then ship your item to the buyer.
For sales under $15, Poshmark charges a flat commission of $2.95. For sales over $15, you’ll pay a 20% commission (meaning you’ll keep 80% of the sale price).
If you’re looking for a place to sell designer clothes, Poshmark is an app to check out.
6. Decluttr
Decluttr is a selling app that specifically caters to tech products. Instead of selling to individuals buyers, you can sell your unwanted tech items directly to Decluttr. This makes it a hassle-free way to sell old tech stuff that you’re no longer using. Once sold, Decluttr will send you a box to ship the item to them. You’ll get your payment directly to PayPal within a few days.
The downside to an app like Decluttr is that you’re not going to make as much money compared to if you sold the item yourself to a buyer using an app like OfferUp, Facebook Marketplace, or eBay.
However, your time is valuable and sometimes it’s not worth it to deal with the headache of selling an item. If that’s you, then Decluttr is a good option to clear your old tech clutter.
7. 5miles
5miles is an app that’s very similar to OfferUp. It’s an app-based selling marketplace that lets you list items locally. Listing your items is similar to OfferUp, where you can get things listed up with just a few clicks.
The main downside with 5miles is that it doesn’t have that many users, so I’ve never had much success with it. Depending on where you live though, it might have a bigger user base, so if you’re having trouble finding buyers, it can make sense to branch out to an app like 5miles.
8. VarageSale
VarageSale is another app that’s very similar to OfferUp, offering an app-based selling marketplace where you can find local buyers for your items. VarageSale brands itself as an online garage sale. And that’s pretty much what they are.
Similar to OfferUp, you can list your items on VarageSale in just a few clicks. Buyers can then message you and you can arrange a time and place to complete the transaction.
Like with 5miles, I’ve never had much luck with VarageSale, but it could have more users where you live, so it doesn’t hurt to try it out.
My Favorite Apps Like OfferUp
For me, whenever I’m looking to sell anything, I primarily stick to three main apps. If I’m selling an item locally, I’ll first list it on Facebook Marketplace. Usually, that’s enough for me to find a buyer quickly. If I need to, I’ll also list items on OfferUp. If I’m really having trouble selling, then I’ll turn to Craigslist as well.
I mainly use eBay for smaller items that I’m able to ship. Even though I have to pay a commission to eBay, I find it worth it since it’s really the only place I can find buyers for some of the things I’m selling.
That’s a look at some of the important apps that are like OfferUp. Now go out there and make some extra money!
