If you deliver with DoorDash, you might be asking yourself this question: Can I DoorDash in another state? The short answer is – yes you can! If you are signed up as a Dasher you can log into your DoorDash account and start dashing anywhere that DoorDash operates. Since DoorDash operates in just about every city in the United States, you can pretty much DoorDash anywhere.
In this post, I’ll walk you through exactly how you can DoorDash in another state. We’ll also discuss some things you should be aware of if you’re going to DoorDash in another state.
Can I DoorDash In Another State?
DoorDash makes it easy to Dash in another state because they don’t make you contact support or do anything special to do so. All you have to do is log into the Dasher app and if there is availability in the zone you’re in, you can click Dash Now and start Dashing.
To start Dashing in another state or city, you do the following:
- Log into your Dasher app.
- Select the zone you want to dash in.
- Click Dash Now if you’re in the zone and there’s room for more dashers. If you’re outside of the zone, you can click Dash Along The Way. You’ll start receiving orders once you get into the zone you’ve selected.
- If there isn’t room for more dashers, you can click Schedule Now and schedule a time to dash in the future.
That’s it! You don’t have to do anything special to deliver for DoorDash in another state. Just log into the Dasher app and if DoorDash operates in the city you’re in, you can select a starting point and start dashing.
How Do You DoorDash In Another State?
If you want to DoorDash in another state, you have to think about how you’ll complete your deliveries. I usually bring a delivery bag with me whenever I travel, just in case I want to do deliveries.
If you’re driving somewhere and have a car, then you shouldn’t have a problem doing deliveries. If you don’t have a car and are staying in a dense area, you can be strategic and only accept orders that you can complete by walking.
The last way to do it – and what I usually do – is to take advantage of bikeshare systems. Most cities have a bikeshare system that allows you to rent a bike by the hour or day. In Chicago, for example, I’ve used their Divvy bikeshare system to do deliveries. I’ve done the same when I’m in Washington DC with the Capital Bikeshare system. It doesn’t cost much, so as long as I can make more than it costs, I can earn some money, pay for the bike, and explore the city.
The Best Part About Doing DoorDash In Another State
The nice thing about doing DoorDash in another state is that you don’t have to contact DoorDash or do anything to be able to Dash outside of your home market. This is in contrast to an app like Grubhub, which requires you to contact Grubhub support and have them switch your city.
Since it’s so easy to do DoorDash in another state, this makes DoorDash an interesting way to earn money while you’re traveling. I do this almost every time I travel. When I get to a new city, I’ll turn on the DoorDash app and see if I can Dash. Most of the time, I’ll rent a bike from a bikeshare system, then go around doing some deliveries if I have some time.
The benefit is I get to earn some extra money while I’m traveling and I get to explore the city. You might even find a restaurant that you want to check out while you’re dashing in another city. It’s also a nice way to see parts of the city outside of the typical tourist spots. I love checking out a city like a local, so doing DoorDash in another state is one way I can do that.
Things To Be Aware Of When Dashing In Another State
There are a few things to be aware of when Dashing in another state. The most important is to consider potential tax issues. Some states may require you to pay income tax if you earn income while in that state. That being said, from a practical standpoint, DoorDash only sends you a single 1099 and doesn’t differentiate what state your income came from, so whether you really have to think about this is up to you. If you need a little more assistance, you can use a tax tool such as Taxcaster to help you decipher the numbers more accurately.
Another thing to think about is what mode of transport you’re going to use while in another city. If you’re renting a car, you could consider delivering using a car rental. And as I mentioned previously, I prefer using a bike, which I can usually get by using the city’s bikeshare system. With a bike, I avoid any potential insurance issues and reduce my expenses since I don’t need to worry about gas.
