DoorDash pickup is a feature in the DoorDash app that allows customers to place pickup orders at local restaurants. It’s a convenient way to order food at restaurants that might not otherwise have a convenient online ordering system.
I rarely order delivery, instead opting to pick up my order using apps like DoorDash. It saves me a little bit of money when I order this way. Plus, I get some comfort in knowing that I’m picking up my own order and will handle it properly and make sure it doesn’t get cold.
In this post, we’ll take a closer look at how DoorDash pickup works and discuss some important things you should know when it comes to ordering food using DoorDash pickup.
How Does DoorDash Pickup Work?
You have two options on how to order your food when you open the DoorDash app. The first option is the regular delivery method. When you order delivery with the DoorDash app, your order gets picked up by a delivery person (called Dashers), then delivered to your house. This is the way most people use DoorDash.
The second way you can order food with DoorDash is by using DoorDash pickup. When you open the DoorDash app, you’ll find an option to place a pickup order in the app. You can find the pickup button at the bottom of the main screen in the DoorDash app.
When you click on the pickup button, you’ll go to a map that shows all the restaurants near you that are accepting pickup orders. Note that pickup orders are not limited based on your location (unlike delivery orders that can be limited based on how far you are from the restaurant). You can place a pickup order at any restaurant you want – it’s just a matter of whether you are willing to go there to pick it up.
To make sure you don’t accidentally place a pickup order when you actually meant to place a delivery order, DoorDash will ask you to confirm that you are going to pick up the order before you place it. This makes sense since people do sometimes place the wrong type of order.
After you place the order, you’ll get a message that tells you when your order will be ready. You can then go to the restaurant and pick up your order. Just give the restaurant your name when you arrive.
The nice thing about placing a pickup order is that it doesn’t come with extra fees. Unlike delivery orders, which charge you a delivery fee and service fee, DoorDash pickup orders have no fees. However, many restaurants do charge a higher price on the DoorDash app compared to if you order from the restaurant directly, so you should be aware of that if you’re looking to save money.
When you place a delivery order, you should leave a tip if you want a Dasher to deliver your order. With DoorDash pickup, this isn’t necessary since the restaurant will make your order regardless of whether you tip or not. That being said, you probably should consider tipping when you place a pickup order, but that’s up to you.
One Important Thing To Know About DoorDash Pickup
One important thing to know about placing orders with DoorDash is that if you place an order through the DoorDash app, the restaurant you order from will get charged a commission fee. This fee typically ranges from 10% to 25% of the order value. There’s been a lot of media attention over the past few years about these fees and how difficult they are for small restaurants.
If you’re trying to support local restaurants, I’d generally recommend placing the order directly with the restaurant instead of through the DoorDash app.
The main reason I’ll use the DoorDash app to pick up an order is if I have a promo code or credits that I want to use. DoorDash does regularly send out promo codes to some customers, so if you get one of those, use it on a DoorDash pickup order to get a discount on your food.
Conclusion
DoorDash pickup is a convenient option you can use if you’re looking to order food and are willing to pick it up yourself. You don’t have to pay delivery fees when you use DoorDash pickup, which is another plus.
You can often get your order faster too since you don’t have to wait for a Dasher to pick up your order. And it gives you more control of your order since you can get your order when it’s hot and make sure it doesn’t get cold on the way to your house.
There are downsides to placing a pickup order too. Prices in the DoorDash are often higher. Restaurants also have to pay commissions to DoorDash for orders placed in the app. If you care about supporting local restaurants, it may make more sense to order directly with the restaurant if you’re going to be picking up your order.
