Why Is DoorDash Pickup Only?

If you’re trying to order food with DoorDash and find you can only place orders for pickup, you might be asking yourself – why is DoorDash pickup only?

If you log into the DoorDash app and find that you can only place orders for pickup, it’s likely because the DoorDash app is down or there’s some other event causing DoorDash to limit orders to pickup only. It’s a bummer when this happens. After all, most of us use DoorDash precisely because we can get orders delivered to us from our favorite local restaurants.

Fortunately, there are many things you can do if you find that DoorDash is pickup only. In this post, we’ll look at why DoorDash could be pickup only and discuss what you can do about it.

DoorDash offers two ways to get your food. The first – and most common method – is to place orders for delivery. When you do that, a Dasher will pick up your order and deliver it to you. All you have to do is sit back and wait.

The second method is to place an order for pickup. This is when you place an order using the DoorDash app, then go to the restaurant to pick up your order. The advantage of doing a pickup order is that you avoid the delivery fees, can get your food faster, can avoid getting wrong orders, and can avoid having to tip a delivery driver. Most of the time when I place an order with DoorDash, I do it for pickup because I find it more reliable than waiting for a driver to deliver it to me.

If you are looking to place an order on DoorDash and find that it’s only offering pickup orders, it likely comes down to one of three reasons. These include the following:

The DoorDash App Is Down

The most common reason that DoorDash might be offering pickup only is that the DoorDash app is down or has crashed. While not a common occurrence by any means, it does happen often enough that you’ll likely run into this issue at some point.

If the DoorDash app is down or has crashed, DoorDash may limit orders to pickup only. This is especially the case where orders are still getting through to restaurants, but Dashers aren’t receiving the orders in their apps.

DoorDash doesn’t want to have a situation where restaurants are preparing orders but no one is delivering them, so they’ll turn off deliveries and limit orders to pick up.

There Aren’t Enough Dashers Working

A second reason why DoorDash might be limiting orders to pickup only is if there aren’t enough Dashers working. As you can expect, DoorDash delivery only works if there are Dashers to deliver orders (i.e. DoorDash delivery drivers). Unfortunately, depending on when you are ordering, there can be times when there aren’t enough Dashers to deliver orders for customers.

In a situation like this, DoorDash may limit orders to pickup only until enough Dashers start working.

There’s Inclement Weather Or Some Other Event

The final reason why DoorDash may be limited to pickup orders only is when there’s inclement weather or some other event impacting customer deliveries. For example, if there’s a major snowstorm or rainstorm, DoorDash may limit orders to pick up since it would be difficult to get Dashers on the road or could be dangerous. If you want the food, you’ll need to pick it up yourself.

What To Do If DoorDash Is Pickup Only Right Now

There are three main things you can do if you find DoorDash is pickup only. These include the following:

Pickup Your Order. The most obvious thing you can do is simply place your order for pickup and then go to the restaurant to pick it up. I prefer placing DoorDash orders this way because I can usually get my food faster and have more control over when I get my food. I also save some money when I place orders for pickup since I can avoid the delivery fees.

Use A Different Food Delivery App. If you need to have your order delivered to you, then your best option is to check another food delivery app. If your city has DoorDash, it likely also has Uber Eats and Grubhub. It’s worth checking to see if those apps are offering delivery. If the DoorDash app is down, for example, then switching over to Uber Eats or Grubhub can make a lot of sense.

Wait Until Delivery Comes Back. Your last option is to simply wait for DoorDash to start offering delivery again. There’s no telling how long this can take, but if the app is down or there aren’t enough drivers, you hopefully won’t have to wait long. If inclement weather or some other event is happening, then you might be waiting longer.

Final Thoughts

DoorDash pickup is a feature of DoorDash that I use regularly. But if you’re trying to get your food delivered to you, then it can be frustrating when you find that DoorDash is pickup only.

Fortunately, there are many options you have to get your food. Pick up the food yourself. Or try using another food delivery app like Uber Eats or Grubhub. No matter what’s happening, if you need to get your food, you can probably figure out a way to get it to you.
