Getting the wrong DoorDash order can be a frustrating experience. If this happens to you and you have the wrong DoorDash order (or you have items missing from your order), don’t worry too much about it. You can report it to DoorDash and get a refund or a credit for some or all of your order.
In this post, we’ll look at how to deal with a wrong DoorDash order, what you should and shouldn’t do about it, and discuss some tips and tricks to avoid getting the wrong order in the first place. For Dashers, we’ll also briefly look at DoorDash wrong order violations and what they are.
Reporting Wrong DoorDash Orders
If you get the wrong DoorDash order or are missing items in your order, you should report this to DoorDash immediately. The process of reporting a wrong order to DoorDash is straightforward. You’ll do the following:
- Go to the order in your DoorDash app.
- Tap the “Help” button in the top right corner.
- Under “Order Issues,” select the option indicating you received the wrong order. If you’re only missing a few items, you’ll select that you are missing items. And if the order wasn’t made correctly, you’ll select that the items were made incorrectly.
- After you’ve selected your issue, follow the prompts on the screen.
Once you go through the above steps, DoorDash will either issue you a refund for your order or give you a credit. This usually happens immediately or within a few hours at most. If it’s just a few items that are missing, you’ll receive a refund for the missing items. If there are larger issues (such as you received the wrong order) you’ll likely receive a full refund.
And if you still have issues that haven’t been addressed, contact DoorDash support and they’ll be able to give you further assistance. For additional information, you can check out the DoorDash directions on how to report missing items or a wrong order.
What You Shouldn’t Do About Wrong DoorDash Orders
When you’re missing items in your DoorDash order, it can be tempting to be upset at your Dasher for delivering the wrong order to you. While it sometimes can be the Dasher’s fault that your order is wrong, the vast majority of the time, the issue isn’t with the Dasher, but rather with the restaurant.
So, at the outset, don’t immediately take your frustrations out on your Dasher. Most restaurants seal items in a bag before handing the order to the delivery person, so even if your order is wrong, your delivery person might have had no way to confirm the order was correct other than by taking the restaurant’s word on it.
Your order could also be wrong due to an honest mistake. Dashers often have to deliver multiple orders at the same time and with so much going on, Dashers can sometimes mix up orders. It can happen to the best of us. Understand that it’s probably an accident and that we all make mistakes.
The second thing you shouldn’t do is contact your Dasher after the order is delivered to complain that your order is wrong or is missing items. The fact is, once your order is delivered, your Dasher can’t do much about it. Instead, contact DoorDash with your issues. The exception is if you notice right away that you received someone else’s order. If the Dasher accidentally gave you someone else’s order, they can probably come back to you and make sure you get the right one. But even then, they might not be able to.
Finally, don’t contact the restaurant about your wrong DoorDash order either. Again, your issue shouldn’t be with the restaurant or with the Dasher. You placed your order with DoorDash, so they are the ones that can handle the issue.
In short, when you have an issue with a wrong DoorDash order, don’t contact your delivery person or the restaurant. Contact DoorDash instead. You’ll get a refund or receive DoorDash credits, so it won’t be a big deal.
How To Avoid Wrong DoorDash Orders
There are a few things you can do to minimize wrong orders. The first thing you can do is to avoid asking for extra items in the notes section of your delivery. Some customers will do this thinking they can get some extra stuff, but Dashers don’t see your order notes until after they’ve picked up the order. If you ask for extra food or sauce in the delivery notes, for example, your Dasher isn’t going to see them until they’ve already left the restaurant.
The second thing you can do is consider not ordering drinks. In my experience, drinks are the most commonly missed item by both restaurants and Dashers because restaurants usually add drinks at the end. This makes it easy for the restaurant to forget to hand the drink to the Dasher. Many Dashers also don’t pay attention to the items in the order, so they forget to ask for the drink too.
Finally, whenever you place a DoorDash order, you should always use a credit card, if possible. This is because credit cards come with more consumer protections. If you end up having an issue with your order and DoorDash won’t address it, you can at least file a claim with your credit card company and likely get the order refunded by the bank.
Those are the main things you can do to avoid getting wrong orders and to protect yourself in the event you do get a wrong order. If you stick to normal menu items and avoid customizing your order or making special requests, you’ll have a better shot of receiving an order without any issues.
DoorDash Wrong Order Contract Violations
If you’re a DoorDash Dasher and deliver the wrong order to a customer, you can get a contract violation from DoorDash. DoorDash states that a wrong order violation only applies if you deliver an entirely wrong order to a customer. It does not apply to an order missing items or having incorrect items.
Getting one contract violation won’t lead to deactivation, but if you get too many contract violations, you can be subject to deactivation, so it’s important to be careful when you’re handling multiple orders. I had a situation once where I was delivering multiple orders and dropped off the wrong order to the first customer.
Fortunately, it was a leave-at-door order and I noticed my mistake before I dropped off my second order, so I was able to turn around and switch the order to the correct one. It could have been a horrible mistake though. Here’s a YouTube short of me making this mistake, but also fixing it before the customer noticed.
If you’re handling multiple orders, my best advice is to carefully look at the name on the order and make sure you’re delivering the correct one. It’s a simple step that can save you from making a huge mistake.
Final Thoughts
It can be frustrating when you place a DoorDash order and find that it’s wrong. Fortunately, DoorDash makes it easy to get a refund.
My advice – don’t let a small thing like getting the wrong order ruin your dining experience. Get your refund, then try ordering again another time.
I’m going through placing an order and not receiving it and even givin the photo of delivery and is not my home . There’s proof of it not being delivered to me and I still get rejected on a refund. Feel like I’ve been robbed for my money . And the proof of wrong delivery is there and was provided by doordash themselves yet with the “Review” they don’t consider the fact of proof?
This is not the case for me. Just placed a 50 dollar lunch order on DoorDash and got someone else’s order. Phoned their support twice and was told that DoorDash do not refund or offer credits even they know it is their fault. All I got was sorry
I’d file a chargeback on your card then. That’ll solve the issue.
Yea that’s happened to me the first time I had an incident. This time a dasher brought me a cheeseburger when I ordered a smoothie. He showed me the order number and the pick up number and they were off by 2 digits. He refused to take it back held it up and took a picture. I called immediately to notify them amen I was refunded
