Uber Eats pickup is a feature in the Uber Eats app that allows customers to place pickup orders at local restaurants. I rarely order delivery, instead opting to pick up my order using apps like Uber Eats. I find it to be a convenient way to order food from restaurants, especially if the restaurant doesn’t have an online ordering system.
In addition, ordering Uber Eats for pickup saves me a little bit of money since I don’t have to pay delivery fees. I also get some comfort in knowing I’m picking up my own order and will handle it properly and make sure it doesn’t get cold.
With that said, in this post, we’ll take a closer look at how Uber Eats pickup works and discuss some important things you should know when it comes to ordering food using Uber Eats pickup.
How Does Uber Eats Pickup Work?
There are two primary ways to order your food when you open the Uber Eats app. The first way is the regular delivery method. When you order delivery with the Uber Eats app, your order gets picked up by an Uber Eats delivery driver, then gets delivered to your house. This is the way most people use Uber Eats.
The second way you can order food with Uber Eats is by using the Uber Eats pickup option. When you open the Uber Eats app, you’ll find an option to place a pickup order in the app. You can find the pickup button at the top of the main screen in the Uber Eats app.
When you click on the pickup button, you’ll go to a map that shows all the restaurants near you that are accepting pickup orders. Note that pickup orders are not limited to your specific location (unlike delivery orders that can be limited based on how far you are from the restaurant). You can place a pickup order at any restaurant you want – it’s just a matter of whether you are willing to go there to pick it up.
After you place the order, you’ll get a message that tells you when your order will be ready. You can then go to the restaurant and pick up your order. Most restaurants will only need your name when you arrive.
The nice thing about placing a pickup order is that it doesn’t come with extra fees. This is in contrast to delivery orders, which charge a delivery fee and service fee. However, it is important to note that many restaurants charge higher prices in the Uber Eats app compared to the prices they charge in the restaurant. This is typically done to recoup commission fees, so if you’re looking to save money, be aware that the price of the food in the Uber Eats app could be higher than if you ordered directly from the restaurant.
In addition to saving on delivery fees and service fees, placing pickup orders can also save you on tipping. When ordering for delivery, giving a good tip is a necessity, as drivers will often reject your order if the pay is too low. While drivers can’t see exactly what you are tipping, they can get a good idea by looking at the payout. For pickup orders, tipping isn’t required, as restaurants will always prepare your order even if you don’t tip.
One Important Thing To Know About Uber Eats Pickup
One important thing to know about Uber Eats is that if you place an order through the Uber Eats app, the restaurant you order from will get charged a commission fee. This fee typically ranges from 10% to 25% of the order value. There’s been a lot of media attention over the past few years about these fees and how difficult they can be for small restaurants.
If you’re trying to support local restaurants, I’d generally recommend placing the order directly with the restaurant instead of through the Uber Eats app so they can avoid paying the extra commission fee.
The main reason I’ll use the Uber Eats app to pick up an order is if I have a promo code or credits that I want to use. Uber Eats does regularly send out promo codes to some customers, so if you get one of those, you can use it on an Uber Eats pickup order to get a discount on your food.
Conclusion
Uber Eats pickup is a convenient option you can use if you’re looking to order food and are willing to pick it up yourself. You don’t have to pay delivery fees when you use Uber Eats pickup, which is another plus. You can often get your order faster too since you don’t have to wait for a driver to pick up your order. And it gives you more control of your order since you can pick up your order right away and make sure it doesn’t get cold on the way to your house.
There are downsides to placing a pickup order too. Prices in the Uber Eats app are often higher. Restaurants also have to pay commissions to Uber Eats for orders placed in the app. If you care about supporting local restaurants, it may make more sense to order directly with the restaurant if you’re going to be picking up your order anyway.
